Better results in less time? How good is that? The Benefits of Interval Training….

Increased endurance – Interval training actually trains your heart to pump more blood to the muscles and it trains your muscles to extract that oxygen more efficiently, making all your other workouts easier to handle.

More efficient workouts – If you don’t have much time, interval workouts are great timesavers, allowing you to get a lot done in a shorter period of time.

More fuel efficiency – Interval training enhances your body’s utilization of fats and carbs.

More power and endurance – Working at high intensities raises your lactate threshold and can improve your performance.

Reduced risk of injury or overtraining – Because you’re varying intensity, you may be able to avoid overuse injuries or overdoing it with longer workouts.

More fun – Interval workouts have much more variety than other workouts, making them less tedious.

Weight loss – Studies show that interval training, even at a moderate intensity, may burn more fat and, if you work hard enough, can increase after burn.

Many a times you would have heard of a very common phrase during your weight
reduction regime, “You can’t eat this. It contains sugar.”

All books from past years say cutting out carbohydrates, especially sugar, is the true path to weight loss. The common perception, years ago was that sugar intake was associated with several chronic diseases: diabetes, coronary heart disease, obesity.

Many people still believe that sugar is fattening. But, experts say it’s time to find a new path because they say sugar itself does not make you fat.

As sugar intake goes up, fat intake goes down — a fact that was confirmed by researchers from Michigan State University at East Lansing. Research shows that eating a high-fat diet will, indeed, make you fat.

Researchers of Purdue University in Indiana (United States) have found that the artificial sweeteners are more fattening than sugar as the consumption of the low-calorie substitutes makes it harder for people to control their intake as well as body weight (2008).

Part of the reason behind all the fingers pointing at sugar stems from the indisputable fact that people are eating more sugar than ever and, coincidentally, are fatter than ever. But what’s often overlooked in that seemingly logical argument is that we are also less physically active than ever. So we’re less active, but we’re eating more calories and fat.

Despite popular belief that sugar causes obesity, a number of studies show an inverse relationship between reported sugar consumption and degree of overweight. Research has confirmed that very little carbohydrate from the food we eat is converted to body fat under normal circumstances. This is true of all types of carbohydrate, including sugar. Obesity is basically a consequence of higher energy intake than energy expenditure, where excess calories are stored as fat.

A high intake of fat is far more likely to result in weight gain than a high intake of carbohydrate. This is because all fat calories are immediately stored in fat cells. But carbohydrates and protein are converted into glucose for fuel, and only those calories in excess of the body’s energy needs are stored. And losing weight means losing stored body fat.

A study at Duke University shows that healthy dieters can lose weight on a high-sugar, low-fat diet just as easily as they can on a low-fat, low-sugar diet. Obese women lost weight on low-calorie diet that derived 43 per cent of calories from sugar (simple carbohydrate); matching the weight loss of a group that ate the same number of calories, but which substituted starch and an artificial sweetener in place of sugar.

Results also demonstrated that the body processes simple carbohydrates (sugars) and complex carbohydrates (starches) in much the same manner.

Carbohydrates are the dieter’s best friend. Sugar and other carbohydrates provide 4 calories per gram, the same as protein. Fats have more than twice the calories-9 per gram and alcohol 7calories per gram.

Interestingly, in terms of palatability and satiety it is far easier to overeat fat than sugar. Fat in foods does not always taste fatty and thus very high levels of fat intake can be reached without the consumer being aware of it.

Conversely, sugar usually tastes sweet — and high levels become too sweet, thus consumption is limited. Foods that contain sugar and fat, such as chocolate and ice-cream, will taste sweet, not fatty — and then sugar gets the blame for the fact that the food is fattening.

It is recommended to have a high-carbohydrate (55-60% of calories), low-fat (20-25% of calories) diet as the best approach for weight loss. That, plus regular exercise — whether it’s walking, jogging, playing tennis, or simply playing with your kids — is the real key to weight loss, regardless of whether your diet contains sugar.

At the end, one popular calorie-saving tip: Substitute one teaspoon of jam or jelly for butter on your breakfast toast.

General fitness is essential in everyone’s life. The fitter and more active we are each day, the healthier, stronger and happier we all can be. It also reduces our chances of becoming ill as fitness stimulates the entire body to work effectively.

Unfortunately there are some illnesses that we can not avoid but others are brought on by our environment as well as our daily routine. Diabetes is one of these illnesses. There are two types of Diabetes, Type 1: Where the body doesn’t produce enough insulin and Type 2: Where the body produces enough insulin but doesn’t use it properly. Diabetes is a chronic condition in which there is too much sugar, or glucose in the blood. The sugar levels are kept at a normal level by a hormone called insulin. Insulin moves the sugar from the blood into the muscles to provide energy.ody to work effectively.

To help balance the sugar levels, a persons diet needs to be changed . An increase in carbohydrates is needed, but should be eaten in small regular meals throughout the day to prevent Hypoglycaemia - A condition in which the sugar levels in the blood fall below normal. It is also important to look for foods that are high in carbohydrates but have a low GI Factor – The low GI Factor will allow the carbohydrates to be released over a longer time and therefore aid in the balancing of the sugar levels longer. The book “The GI Factor, The Glucose Revolution” is a great reference for further information on the GI Factor.

An increase in sedentary lifestyle, plus the increase in fatty and overly processed foods all lead to the onset of Diabetes, as overweight people can inhibit the production of insulin in their bodies due to the high levels of fat. With the increase of technology in today’s society, people need to perform less and less physical tasks to get through each day and as such, a regular and supervised exercise plan is essential, especially in the case of people who suffer from Diabetes. There needs to be an increase in carbohydrates and physical exercise in the same proportions.

It is very important for Diabetics to walk and/ or run as much as possible each week to increase overall fitness and burn fat. Likewise a specific weights program is needed to increase the metabolism and the strength of the muscles and bones.

With controlled exercise and a change of diet, the effects of Diabetes can be largely controlled, but you should always seek a doctor’s advice each step of the way, coupled with the advice of your Personal Trainer.

Obesity in a child is a serious situation that needs to be dealt with, not ignored.

Kids of all ages will enjoy their lives much more if they learn to eat healthy foods and to get plenty of exercise. If your child does not seem as happy as she could be, take some action that will put her life on a path of healthy living that also will make life much more enjoyable.

Obesity in a child starts with what the child eats.

A child who is obese could also be having thyroid gland problems, this will make the work more difficult. The calories that turn into fat and fat itself, come from somewhere, and that is in the food. Often, diets and diet foods do not help. Why? Because diet foods will tend to make your child hungrier rather than energize their body.

Instead of dictating all food choices, try a little bit more pleasant approach.

Let the child make a few of the choices about food. Take your child to the grocery store and let him or her choose from the fruits and vegetables. Does she prefer apples to oranges? Letting the child choose a favorite fruit will make the process much more enjoyable. Keep beverage choices to juice, milk or water. If the child has a wish for something sweet, a bowl of sweet juicy fruit gives them the much needed vitamins and minerals and satisfies their sweet tooth. Keep baked treats, ice cream, or sweet treats for special occasions and keep it controlled. These kinds of treats should not be a daily event. To keep meals interesting, make sure to vary the diet and help your child pick a variety of healthy foods to eat properly as a general goal every day.

Obesity in a child is not something that disappears overnight.

Eating properly is the first step. Getting plenty of exercise is the next step. Find a physical hobby your child likes, perhaps basketball or swimming, or tennis. Something that will help the child keep active. This will help them to become healthy and yet still enjoy the exercise they are getting. Join your child and both you and your child will be healthier and happier.

Obesity in a child can be serious.

It can cause or be caused by serious medical problems like thyroid dysfunction or diabetes. If your child is starting to show symptoms of obesity, have him or her checked by a doctor. The child’s doctor may also be able to help with approaches to helping your child lose weight.

At some point in the various journeys we embark on in our lives, we get to a part where we feel like giving up. Sometimes we give up before we even start and other times we give up just before we are about to make that huge break-through that we have been putting so much effort in to achieve.

I have created this list of 22 reasons why you should never give up and I hope that you will find it before you give up, so that I can inspire you to keep going!

1- As Long As You Are Alive Anything Is Possible
The only valid excuse you have to give up is if you are dead. As long as you are alive (and healthy and free) you have the choice to keep trying until you finally succeed.

2- Be Realistic
The chance of mastering something the first time you do it is almost non-existent. Everything takes time to learn and you will make mistakes. Learn from them.

3- Michael Jordan
Arguably the best basketball player of all time. He attributes his success to all his failures. He just never gave up even when he knew he had missed over 300 shots and had missed the winning shot of the game many times. Every time he got knocked down he got back up again.

4- Lance Armstrong
Lance was diagnosed with serious cancer that had spread throughout his entire body. He had cancer cells the size of golf balls in his lungs. Despite all odds he overcame the cancer and set out to win the Tour de France 6 Consecutive years in a row.

5- Muhammad Ali
“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”. Muhammad Ali is one of the best boxers the world has ever known. He suffered only 5 losses while having 56 wins and was the first boxer to win the lineal heavyweight championship three times. This is a guy who literally knows how to get knocked down and get back up.

6- The Man Who Created The Marathon
Very long ago an Athenian herald was sent to Sparta to get help when the Persians landed in Greece. It was said that he ran 240km in 2 days and after that he ran 40km to announce the victory of the Greeks only to collapse and die on the spot from exhaustion. If you ever feel like things are difficult, imagine what it would be like to run 240km in 2 days. (Don’t try that because you might die from it, but use it as an inspiration).

7- Chris Gardner – The Pursuit of Happiness
Have you seen the movie “The Pursuit of Happiness”? It is based on the life story of Chris Gardener, a man who went for the lowest of the lows in an environment where most people would give up (no money, no job) to the highest of the highs (A millionaire with his own investment firm). If you ever think about giving up, watch this movie!

8- Kanye West
I’m pretty sure you have heard of the rapper Kanye West. Read his story. He is a big inspiration for me and proves that you can go from having very little to being among the most famous and respected people in the world.

9- Nelson Mandela
Campaigned for justice and freedom in his South Africa. Spent 20 years in jail for his opposition to apartheid. On release he healed the wounds of apartheid by his magnanimous attitude toward his former political enemies.

10- You Are Strong
You are stronger than you think. One little setback is not enough to stop you from achieving your goals. Neither are 10 or 100 or 1000 setbacks.

11- Prove Yourself
You don’t want to be known as someone that is weak and gives up. Go out there and prove yourself to the world and to yourself. You CAN and WILL achieve what you set out to do. The only time you fail is when you give up.

12- Has It Been Done Before?
If someone else can do it then so can you. Even if it is only one other person in the world that has achieved what you have set out to achieve, that should be reason enough for you to never give up.

13- Believe In Your Dreams
Don’t sell yourself short. In life there are going to be many people who will try to bring you down and tell you what you want to achieve is not possible. Don’t let anyone destroy your dreams.

14- Your Family and Friends.
Let the people you love and who mean the world to you be your inspiration to persist and persevere. Maybe you need to try a different angle, study more or practice more but don’t give up!

15- Because I Tell You To.
Not that I am any sort of guru or Godly figure, but if you want to give up then don’t. Just because I’m telling you not to.

16- There Are People Worse-Off
Right now there are many people who are in a worse situation and environment than you are right now. Are you thinking about giving up running 5 miles a week? Think about the people who are unable to even walk and how much they would give to be able to run 5 miles every day.

17- Improve Our World
When you achieve whatever you set out to achieve you can use your success to make a difference to the world or other peoples lives.

18- Get Rich or Die Trying
Like Fiddy (50 cent) says, “Get rich or die trying”. 50 Cent is rich, he made it (although he did get shot 9 times). Face your fears and don’t take the easy way out by giving up.

19- Let The Haters Hate
There will always be haters. There will always be plenty of naysayers and people who try to tear you down. Don’t pay attention to them and don’t take what they say to heart. Let the haters hate and you keep believing in yourself.

20- You Deserve To Be Happy
Don’t ever let anybody tell you otherwise. You deserve to be happy and you deserve to have success. Keep that mindset and never give up until you reach your destination!

21- Inspire Others
Be an inspiration to others by refusing to give up. Who knows what someone else can achieve because you never gave up and in turn inspired them not to give up.

22- You Are So Close
Often when you feel like you want to give up and you are about to give up you are so close to making a huge break-thru. Seth Godin has written an awesome book about this called “The Dip” – a riveting read that teaches that at any given time you are always just a heartbeat away from success.

P.S. NEVER GIVE UP!

If you do not know what Tabata is, I’ll explain a little bit about it. Tabata was founded in Japan by Izumi Tabata. He conducted tests on two groups of athletes; comparing moderate high intensity training with high intensity interval training.

The results were that the athletes training in high intensity interval training improved their aerobic systems as well as their anaerobic system. The athletes who did the moderate high intensity training only improved their aerobic system and had little to no increase in their anaerobic system.
